Located on the south-east from the capital city Maidstone is considered as a cultural centre of Kent.
The begginings of the city go back much further than Roman invasion. Evidence of first settlements are dated beyonc Stone age. Neolithic remains reveal that people had lived there for a long time. However the buildings and fixtures which are standing for now on were built by Romans and Normans. As a town with its legal charter and coat of arms Maidstone appeard in 16th century
Since the Civil War, when the Parlamentarian forces won a battle one of the Clerks to the High Councile of Justice declared the death sentence on Charles I, Maidstone is know as hometown of Mayor and Regiciderv- killer of kings.
As to the eceonomy city it was highly dependable from the river. The first industries were paper mills, brewerys and cloth.
